Board President Barbara Sidway announced at the Oregon 150 Board of Director’s meeting on June 13th that additional funding to support Oregon 150’s efforts may be included in an end-of-session “Christmas Tree” bill.  The amount of the funding will be determined by the Ways and Means Committee co-chairs for inclusion in this bill and we understand the session will end very shortly.

Legacies on the Ground and
In the Hearts and Minds of Oregonians

Saturday, February 14, 2009, is Oregon’s 150th birthday. Oregon 150 wants to ensure a celebration that will be remembered 50 years from now.

One-Time Request: Oregon 150’s all-volunteer Board will use any funding it receives from the legislature to award matching grants to a full slate of projects across the state as well as help with planning, marketing, and fundraising to spread the celebration to every corner and every community.  Oregon 150’s goal is to harness the energy and creativity of Oregonians at the grassroots level so that each community will celebrate in its own way.

Here are some of the birthday presents—i.e. “outcomes”—that Oregon 150 wants to give Oregonians:

A Rich Understanding of What it Means to be an Oregonian

Today, students receive little education about Oregon’s history and civic structure.  Moreover, many adults don’t fully understand our state’s accomplishments or how we are governed. Greater knowledge about our history will create committed, informed citizens. Oregon 150 plans to support:

  • A variety of teaching resources about Oregon history for K-12 and higher education curricula
  • Oregon Stories, a toolkit for communities encouraging them to conduct oral histories, share local history through pageants, photograph daily life, and set up blogs to record citizens’ hopes and dreams for the future, all to capture and share the essence of Oregon life and history

A Deeper Appreciation for Oregon’s Places and Bounty

Oregon is a cornucopia of beautiful landscapes, storied towns, talented people, and just about every product you can imagine, from computer chips to pinot noir. Oregon 150 wants to encourage people to travel throughout the state and learn about our tremendous bounty and natural resources. As a result, Oregon 150 expects to create jobs, stimulate the economy, and foster an even deeper appreciation for Oregon. Projects that we will support include:

  • A campaign to encourage exploring every corner of the state and experiencing firsthand our cultural treasures and natural beauty
  • Take Care of Oregon Day, a day of statewide volunteerism

Groundwork for a Robust and Sustainable Future

Oregon 150 wants Oregon’s people and resources to remain strong over the next 50 years.  To that end, we are encouraging projects that explore the challenges facing the state and seek concrete solutions to them.  From our foundation of understanding Oregon’s history and appreciating all that we are today, we will build a strong future to hand to the next generations.

Oregon 150’s Vision, Mission, and Values

Vision: Appreciate the past, celebrate the present, imagine the future

Mission: Oregon’s sesquicentennial will inspire people across the state to remember, experience, and celebrate Oregon and, together, create a robust and sustainable future

Values: The sesquicentennial will involve Oregonians from all walks of life

  • All ages, income levels, and ethnic backgrounds
  • New and longtime Oregonians
  • Rural and urban

The sesquicentennial will reconnect Oregonians with our state and engender an appreciation of what it means to be an Oregonian

  • Oregonians will appreciate and understand their natural, cultural, and social history
  • Oregonians will know and appreciate the state’s civic institutions and special accomplishments
  • Oregonians will understand the challenges facing the state

The sesquicentennial will contribute to the welfare of Oregon through sustainable legacies

  • A vision for the state 50 years from now
  • Robust local economies
  • A legacy of national significance
  • Committed, inspired communities

Oregon 150 will empower and support local initiatives for the sesquicentennial

Oregon 150 will work with existing organizations embracing its mission and values
